Character’s Name

Father Amador

Role in Plot

Father Amador is a minor character who plays a part in not warning Santiago about his murder. He forgets to warn Santiago about his murder because he is too enthralled by the arrival of the bishop. Also, Father Amador is the one that performs a ‘massacre’ (the autopsy) on Santiago’s body when Dr. Dionisio is absent and hurriedly buries him the next day.

Significance of Name in Work

Amador in Spanish means lover which may insinuate that perhaps he is the one that took Angela’s virginity. If this is what the author intended then it seems reasonable that Angela would want to hide the identity of the man that took her virginity.

Father Amador’s name is also quite contradictory to his actions in the novel. He performs the autopsy with no love at all, on the other hand he does it in a violent way, he does not love, and he welcomes the Vicario brothers into the church after the murder.
